Our Focus: Eradicating Poverty & Food Insecurity
The Junior League of San Jose is committed to addressing the evolving needs of our community. Given the increasing prevalence of poverty and food insecurity in our region, we have adjusted our focus to prioritize these critical issues. Our work is dynamic, adapting to the most pressing challenges of the moment. This commitment to ongoing progress ensures that we are well-prepared to meet the demands of the future.
Santa Clara County, a region known for its technological advancements and economic prosperity, faces a significant challenge in the form of widespread food insecurity. This issue, largely rooted in the widening gap between the wealthy and the impoverished, affects a significant portion of our community. Research conducted by Feeding America underscores the severity of this problem, revealing that between 7% and 25% of Santa Clara County residents struggle to consistently access nutritious food. This alarming statistic is exacerbated by factors such as the exorbitant cost of living, limited access to affordable transportation, and disproportionate impacts on racial and ethnic minorities.
To align with our commitment to addressing poverty and food insecurity, the Junior League of San Jose will prioritize the formation of Community Partnerships and will actively seek out organizations working on these issues in Santa Clara County, aiming to establish strategic collaborations that will amplify our impact.
